As an excellent sign of Detroit real estate investing, the 121-year-old building at 6568 Woodward Ave will undergo a $7.5 million redevelopment process, according to Midtown Detroit, Inc, a non-profit planning and development agency. It will be rebranded to Woodward Grant building.
Midtown Detroit Inc. says that the Woodward Grand will have 10,000 square feet each of retail and office space. It will house the Grosse Pointe Farms-based Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation's new headquarters, a corner restaurant called Wilda's Café, 10,000 square feet each. The three story building will also include 10 residential units in its upper two floors.
The project is expected to be completed by early summer. Crain's Detroit reports that among others financing the project, "The Michigan Economic Development Corp. is providing $750,000 in Michigan Community Revitalization Program financing and Invest Detroit is providing $1.3 million. The Wilson Foundation contributed $500,000 for green infrastructure."
Midtown Detroit Inc. Executive Director Sue Mosey said that much of the property is "in very poor condition and hasn't seen any reinvestment for many years." However, the Woodward Grand redevelopment was kicked-started in April 2015 by the purchase of 11 buildings totaling about 64,000 square feet along Woodward between Milwaukee Street and Grand Boulevard.
Mosley also announced the opening of North End Collective, which, according to the Washington Times, "provides local entrepreneurs and small business owners a place to sell their merchandise. The North End Collective and Woodward Grand are along a streetcar line between the New Center area and downtown. The light rail is expected to begin operations this year."
