The Aviation Subdivision neighborhood on Detroit’s northwest side is one of the most desirable areas of the city. Unlike most neighborhoods in Detroit, Aviation offers a wide variety of property styles. Streets like Hartwell are lined with beautiful, well kept- bungalow style properties which range from 900-1300 square feet. On Ward Street, you will find larger colonial style properties which are about 200-400 square feet larger than bungalows. The most prominent street in the neighborhood is Oakman Blvd. Looping across Aviation from beginning to end, Oakman is a wide boulevard that’s really popular with homeowners. Oakman features bungalows, colonials, tudors, and even ranch style properties. One of the advantages living in Aviation is that it sits right on the border with the affluent western suburb of Dearborn. Tireman Ave, on the southern end of the neighborhood, is the dividing line between Detroit and Dearborn. East Dearborn’s bustling business district is walking distance away. The district features large grocery stores, restaurants, shopping and more. Aviation is an exclusive area, with only about 1,000 properties within its borders.
The history of the neighborhood is fascinating. Real estate developer Robert Oakman acquired the land for developments in the early 1920’s according to the Dearborn Historical Museum. Henry Ford is said to have used the area as an airfield until the start of WWI, which explains the trajectory of streets like Littlefield and Esper, likely used as runways. The neighborhood also includes a park and is near several good schools including Mackenzie Elemtary-Middle School. The new, $21M Mackenzie campus was completed in 2012 and continues to be one of the best schools in the Detroit Public Schools system.
