Detroit, known for its rich history and vibrant culture, reached a long-anticipated milestone with the grand opening of the Uniroyal Promenade in October. This half-mile stretch along the renowned Detroit RiverWalk completes a 3.5-mile-long project, the latest jewel in the crown of the best riverwalk in America.
The Uniroyal Promenade, occupying 42 acres of land, replaces the once-empty and polluted site of the Uniroyal plant. Stretching from Mount Elliott Park to Gabriel Richard Park, the Uniroyal Promenade now connects seamlessly to Belle Isle, just east of the iconic MacArthur Bridge. This $11 million development was made possible through a collaborative effort between the City of Detroit, the Michigan Department of Transportation, and the Environmental Protection Agency.
For resident Detroiters and tourists alike, the RiverWalk provides visitors with a picturesque and vibrant space to enjoy the beauty of the city's waterfront. The Uniroyal Promenade is a testament to the city's commitment to revitalizing its amenities for continued entertainment and cultural growth in the city. As a symbol of this commitment to urban renewal, the promenade is poised to become a hub for recreation, relaxation, and community gatherings, further solidifying Detroit's reputation as a city on the rise.
Further, the completion of the Uniroyal Promenade emphasizes the city’s historical transformation from an industrial riverfront marked by factories and warehouses to a public space that welcomes public enjoyment. Looking ahead, the City of Detroit plans to extend the RiverWalk all the way to the Ambassador Bridge, which will bring another 2 miles of waterfront enjoyment to the city.
