In 2000 the last commercial flight landed at Detroit's historic Coleman Young International Airport, known locally as City Airport. In the decades since, the airport has fallen into disrepair and has functioned exclusively as a private airport. There have been persistent rumors about the site returning to its former glory. With every new city administration, there are renewed discussions about making improvements to the once bustling space. Ultimately none of these plans came to fruition. However - a bombshell announcement in October of 2022 may be the news Detroiters have been waiting for.

The airport is set to receive a huge overhaul after the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approved a new airport layout plan - the first in over 30 years. This will allow the city to receive over $100 million in federal grants. One of the largest expenses will be the installation of new hangars. These hangars will include space for small private planes, twin-engine craft, and smaller hangars for single engine planes. Hangars also will include community space for private events. Another great addition will be the return of Benjamin O. Davis Aerospace Technical High School which will be housed in the newly renovated main terminal. This will allow students to be close to aviation operations to foster hands-on learning.

The FAA is also requiring that the city acquire multiple properties adjacent to the airport site. This includes 17 occupied homes and over 50 vacant properties. This is expected to spur renewed interest in the area and in the 48205 zip code in general. This key investment in infrastructure is a welcome sign for the city, which has been plagued by derelict commercial districts throughout the city.
